Josue Salgado scored twice in the second half Tuesday to lift Christopher’s boys soccer team to a season-opening 4-2 victory over visiting Gonzales.

Giovanni Troini and Jose Romo also scored for the Cougars, who overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit.

“I’m very encouraged,” Christopher coach Ricardo Espinosa said. “We’re very happy with where we’re at. We have the personnel now.”

Christopher’s Edwin Galeanna assisted on two of the goals, and teammate Hibsen Tamayo added one assist.

Christopher will meet rival Gilroy in a match dubbed “El Classico” at Garcia-Elder Stadium at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We have an exciting one coming up Thursday night,” Espinosa said. “It’s a really good test because Gilroy High has a good team year in, year out.”
