Cal Fire is doing a control burn in Salinas that can be seen from the San Martin Avenue overpass in Gilroy.

Calfire is conducting a prescribed burn Tuesday on 1,000 acres  – a blaze that is visible throughout the region.

Calfire’s controlled burn is in the area of Old Stage Road and Crazy Horse Road in Salinas, about 20 miles south of Gilroy and Hollister.

It is part of a plan to reduce flammable vegetation. Calfire in a statement noted the fire would be visible from the Salinas Valley, Monterey Peninsula, Marina, North Monterey County, San Juan Bautista and Hollister.

It was to start around 10 a.m. and end at about 5 p.m., with “prime ignition” between noon and 3 p.m.
