Santa Clara County’s one-eighth-cent sales tax increase was approved by voters with 53 percent majority vote as of about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
One-hundred percent of county voting precincts had reported results.
Forty-three percent of voters voted “no” to the tax, known as Measure A, according to the early returns.
The sales tax will fund basic county services such as such as law enforcement and public safety, trauma and emergency room services, health care for low-income children, economic development and job creation, housing for the homeless, and school programs. The eighth-cent tax is expected to raise about $500 million over 10 years, if it wins a simple majority vote.
