Gilroy's Paul Fox brings down Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep's Greg

The Gilroy Mustangs will have five wrestlers vying for a Mid Cals title during tonight’s main event – the 14-match finals at Gilroy High School at 5 p.m.

Victor Olmos, Paul Fox, Niko Villarreal, Willie Fox and Jose Lara are all undefeated thus far, one win shy of the championship. Christopher High’s Jimmie Lopez, a sophomore, earned a second straight Mid Cals finals berth. He finished runner-up last year. This year he is set to face Adrian Camposano of Central.

A marquee matchup at 140-pounds involves Villarreal and three-time state champion Alex Cisneros of Selma. The same can be said for the 147-pound final, which pits Wille Fox against nationally ranked Joey Lavallee of Reno.

Already decided, Gilroy’s Jesse Vasquez finished third at 108-pounds, defeating Alexis Cortes of Madera South 9-3 in the third-place match. Also placing third was Gilroy’s Aaron Gonzalez at 134 pounds. Gonzalez decisioned Isaac Bertalotto of Turlock, 3-2 in the consolation final. Matthew Penyacsek made the podium in fifth place for the Mustangs, who are currently in first place with 279.5 points heading into the finals. Selma, with 236.5 points, is in second.

Two Cougars made the podium. Heavyweight Stevie White took third, while John Riffle captured fourth place at 222 pounds. The Cougars are in 11th place.

Doors open for the finals at 4:30 p.m. There is a small entrance fee. If you are unable to make it out to the action, you can view a live stream on gilroywrestling.com or keep up with results on trackwrestling.com
