Gilroy – The Gilroy baseball team was unable to take advantage of an unexpected Live Oak loss to Salinas Friday, with the Mustangs falling 9-4 to Palma in Salinas on Saturday.

As they were early last week, the Mustangs were briefly tied for first in the Tri-County Athletic League with the Acorns going into Saturday’s rescheduled game.

But with the loss to Palma, Gilroy finds itself in a suddenly up-for-grabs TCAL race. Gilroy, Palma and Hollister are all in second at 8-4 in TCAL, with Live Oak a half-game ahead at 8-3.

On Saturday, the Chieftains scored four runs in the first on starter Carlos Garcia and the Mustangs, who were able to close the gap to 5-3 by the top of the fourth inning. But Palma exploded in their half of the frame, all but dooming Gilroy.

“When they scored four in the fourth, it kind of ended it for us,” said head coach Clint Wheeler.

Note: The Dispatch reported April 27 that the home plate umpire in an April 26 Gilroy-Hollister game had mistakenly called ball four after the count on a Hollister batter went to 3-2 in the sixth inning, and the batter took off for first base. The umpire and several witnesses said the ball four call was never made.
