John Daly, one of nine major champions in the field this week, hits his approach shot on the par 5 605-yard 12th hole during the first round of the Frys.com Open at CordeValle on Thursday (in 2010.)

Two-time Major winner John Daly, Nicolas Colsaerts and Luke Guthrie have been awarded sponsor exemptions into October’s Frys.com Open – the PGA Tour’s stop at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin.

Colsaerts is a member of the European Ryder Cup team, having been selected by captain José María Olazábal. He won the 2012 Volvo Match Play Championship and tied for seventh in the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in June.

Colsaerts is currently No. 36 in the World Rankings.

Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open. He has three other victories. Dividing time this year between the PGA Tour and European Tour, he is No. 133 on the money list in only 12 tournaments. The top 125 earn exemptions for the ensuing year on tour.

Daly participated in the 2010 Frys.com Open and was 5-under-par heading into a rainy final round Sunday, where he shot 82.

Guthrie won last week’s Web.com Tour event in Boise to move up to No. 4 on that money list, assuring his playing privileges on the PGA Tour for 2013.

In three starts on the PGA Tour this summer Guthrie placed among the top-20 in each tournament. Guthrie finished his eligibility at the University of Illinois in June and is taking 13 hours to graduate in December.

Patrick Cantlay, the 2012 college Player of the Year out of UCLA, who left school after his sophomore season to turn professional was awarded a sponsors exemption in June.

Tournament Director Jeff Sanchez said the tournament will later determine the three other players for sponsor exemption selections.

This year’s tournament is Oct. 11-14.
