Local travel baseball team Glory under-14 placed second at the Ultimate Labor Day Tournament at Twin Creeks over the weekend.
After an intense weekend of games, Glory fell 3-2 to the Bulldogs in the championship contest Monday.
Tommy Castro got the start in the final and pitched the five innings. He gave way to Anthonee Bartholic for the final two frames. Glory’s defense kept the game close, playing error-free baseball while executing two pickoffs.
Ryan Adamkiewicz scored in the second on a Brevin Zollinger RBI single. In the sixth inning, Preston Longaker got on base with a single then stole second. A sacrifice bunt from Connor Doyle moved him to third base and a RBI single from Bartholic brought Longaker across home.
In the last inning, Adamkiewicz, the potential tying run, was left stranded in scoring position.
Every player contributed either defensively or offensively. Pitchers Zollinger, Bartholic and Castro, along with catchers BT Ellis and Jose Amaro, who also pitched, remained reliable throughout. Defense delivered time and time again, with diving catches by Adamkiewicz and Nolan Filipe, a standout play at first base by Patrick Dennis.
Adamkiewicz, Ellis and Brandon Cook turned in impressive offensive numbers, but Bartholic led all Glory players at the plate, recording a .615 average and seven RBIs. And to highlight his all-around game, made a spectacular over-the-head running catch in deep center field to accompany his pitching.
“Anthonee was impressive on the mound and at the plate. His potential is only limited to his desire to be great,” manager Dennis Castro said of Bartholic. “This team has come so far and every player is improving. I am proud of their work ethic.”
