Everything went the way of the Christopher High varsity field hockey team Thursday afternoon against Stevenson. Even the program’s first recorded goal via penalty stroke was smoothly deposited by Emma Morley.
Most of the Cougars hovered around the Pirates’ cage all afternoon, and in a span of 60 minutes CHS raised its Mission Trail Athletic League goals-per-game average from one to four in a 7-0 victory in Gilroy.
Christopher’s offense had produced just two goals in three games – including one (Kristen Mank) in the team’s MTAL-opening 1-0 win at Santa Catalina on Tuesday.
But on Thursday, six different Cougars cashed in on chances galore. Morley’s tally, which was the first of two for her, was part of a 4-0 CHS opening half.
“The girls looked like they are figuring out their placement better,” CHS (2-0-2 overall, 2-0 league) coach Lia Peterson said. “They are getting a feel for the field. It takes a little while to get the rust off.”
Sherelle Butler deposited the first goal in the first minute of the game. Less than two minutes later, and after a couple of empty drives, Raquel Roberts made it 2-0. Kyle Robinson scooped home a rebound for a 3-0 lead and Morley’s freebie, which she placed neatly in the lower-left corner of the cage, gave CHS the commanding 4-0 advantage at intermission.
The Cougars kept much of the action in their offensive zone in the second, and two minutes into the half Emily Hilkene’s pass found the stick of Mackenzie Holt, who didn’t miss.
Morley netted her second and Maddie Peterson capped the barrage with one of her own, after assisting Morley’s a few minutes earlier.
