Meet the author of El Cortito at library

Gilroy – Meet the author at the Gilroy Library: experience the farm worker’s history and their struggle for justice through Mo Jourdane’s book, “The Struggle for the Health and Legal Protection of Farm Workers: El Cortito,” photographs by Carlos Legerrette and Juan Lopez.

El Cortito chronicles Jourdane’s decade-long, successful struggle to research and advocate for a state ban of el cortito, the short hoe, and his efforts to protect other civil and human rights of California field workers.

Jourdane will be reading excerpts from his book, followed by a book signing, at 7pm on today, at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna Street. Books will be available for purchase with proceeds to benefit the building of homes in Mexico. Refreshments courtesy of Friends of the Gilroy Library.

VTA to get funds to repair city roads

Gilroy – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will receive a $5.7 million windfall to rehabilitate city roads.

The money is part of $122 million in state and federal funds that were redistributed to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission after some agencies in the state failed to spend their allotted grant money.

“VTA cities have done an excellent job of spending all the federal money they get and that’s important because federal money usually has a use it or lose it clause,” said John Goodwin, spokesman for the MTC, which coordinates transportation projects in nine Bay Area Counties. “Other regions left money on the table and we were able to grab it.”

The money will be used at the VTA’s discretion for paving, patching, striping and other roadway projects.

Caltrain will receive about $9 million to repair tracks and purchase new rail cars and fare equipment. San Jose will get $1 million to improve traffic flow in its busiest corridors.
