Women in Leadership
In honor of Women’s History Month Gavilan College is hosting four hugely successful local career women to share their experiences–Retired Police Chief Denise Turner, Krystal Lomanto, the county’s superintendent of schools, Hollister City Councilwoman Mickie Solorio Luna and Laura Perry, president of Gavilan’s board of trustees.
The panel will be moderated by Gavilan President Kathleen Rose. You can attend for free 1 p.m.-2 p.m. March 20 at the campus library, room 170.
Ukes and Wannabes
Ukulele pickers and grinners meet up the fourth Tuesday of every month to jam at the Old City Hall Restaurant from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
We’re a meetup for ukulele players and those who wish to be.
We meet one a month on the 4th Tuesday evening, 6:00 – 8:00, at Old City Hall Restaurant, 7400 Monterey St., Gilroy, CA. We’re upstairs in the brick room in the back.
A typical meetup is a playlist of 20 songs: they play 10 songs and take a break. During the break they have Open Mic with three slots. There is a Jam Leader who chooses the 20 songs, sometimes with a theme, but sometimes just the Jam Leader’s favorites. They use a similar format to the Monterey Ukulele Group, and get chord charts from a wide variety of sources including Santa Cruz Ukulele Club’s three songbooks, the San Jose Ukulele Club’s digital library and the Morristown Uke Jam’s monthly themed songbooks.
They are starting with just two people – Susan Patereau and Terry Newman – who want to play the ukulele and make new friends and ask that you consider bringing your ukulele, no matter what level you are (beginner, intermediate or pro) and help have a fun ukulele experience.

Home and Garden Tour
The Gilroy Assistance League announces its 13th annual signature fundraiser, May 12 and 13: “Impressions” Home and Garden Tour and Boutique—a strolling tour through the heart of Gilroy featuring five distinctive homes. The tour concludes at a boutique with refreshments and features vendors who bring their creative wares. Tours begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. with final check-in at 1:30 p.m.. Tickets cost $30 in advance and $35 the day of the event and may be purchased online at gilroyassistanceleague.org or from any active member. All proceeds benefit local youth by providing grants to local health and recreation programs, the visual and performing arts programs and numerous other youth oriented projects. Gone Swimmin’
Gavilan College will be offering “Swim For Fitness” class this semester, despite the closure of the campus swimming pool for repairs. The half-unit class, Kinesiology 61, levels A, B, and C, begins on March 28, and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6 p.m – 7:25 p.m. It will be given at Christopher High School.
This course is excellent for swimmers of all skill levels. Work on the Gavilan College swimming pool is expected to be completed over the summer, with on-campus instruction resuming in the fall.

Prom Dresses for Princesses
Princess Project’s goal is to give teens who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend their school prom a chance by providing formal dress and accessories– for free. It may seem trivial to some, but for a teen missing out on this tradition due to cost/dress it can feel alienating and makes prom just another event about haves versus have nots, promoters say.
In its 12th year in Silicon Valley, the group will have a dress giveaway March 18-19 and March 25-26.
