Dear Editor,

The 24-hour television coverage of the events surrounding the death of Pope John Paul II gives me a wonderful sense of solidarity with people all over the world.

I am amazed at the scope of world political leaders and representatives of many Christian denominations and world religions who are expressing admiration and respect for this man of strong moral convictions, stemming from his faith in Jesus Christ.

It is remarkable to reflect upon the power of his moral suasion that helped tear down the Berlin Wall, lessened hostility between Christians and Jews, advocated for peace in the Middle East, urged nations and people that have life’s comforts to help those who lack its necessities, captured the hearts of young people around the world, and challenged us all to follow God’s precepts about marriage, sexuality, and the value and dignity of life.

This media event has put politicians, reporters, and church representatives on camera and asked for their assessment of John Paul’s life. I have been moved at their openness in sharing their personal beliefs and the importance of living the life Jesus calls them to. It’s like faith has come out of the closet. There is an atmosphere of charity and brotherhood engulfing the world.

In my own experience, I know that life in Christ is real, characterized by goodness, generosity, forgiveness, integrity, and life-giving love. God works through his followers to bring others into the sunshine of his life, leaving their baggage and stress behind, taking care of their needs, and giving them his joy – now and for eternity.

I encourage everyone to get back to church and to open your heart to God. He has a wonderful plan for each one of us and will use us, just like John Paul, to bring healing and hope into our homes and workplaces and communities.
