Gilroy – Earlier this month, the Gavilan College baseball team faced one of the Coast Conference South’s toughest teams, the West Valley Vikings.

It wasn’t pretty – the Rams were hammered 20-0 game on a day that saw everything go wrong.

Fast forward to Saturday. The Rams (5-15 CCS, 10-19 overall) saw the Vikings for the third and final time of the season. And while the game resulted in a 7-6 loss, giving West Valley the season sweep, the team has to be much happier with the way it played.

“West Valley is a good club,” said Gavilan head coach Neal Andrade. “They’re one of the top teams in our conference and we actually played a pretty close one this time.”

Left hander Scott Hayslip, who has given the Rams solid innings out of the bullpen all season long, got his first start of the year and found himself in trouble right from the beginning of the contest.

Hayslip walked the first Viking batter he faced before West Valley put another runner on base following a misplayed double-play attempt by the Rams.

The second inning saw Gavilan respond with three runs of their own. The Rams stormed into the lead in the seventh inning with another three runs, but the Vikings finally got to Todd Giminez, who came on in relief of Hayslip, in the eighth.
