CALLER 1: Yes, I’m calling about the football coverage. I know I read last week that they were going to start putting JV in and you missed a good game because they won in the last two minutes with a 2-point conversion. Very exciting and we didn’t read about it. Anyways, it was actually a lot more exciting than the varsity game. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Hey Caller 1, thanks for the call. We had a bit of a scheduling mix up last week. But you have our word that the freshman and JV game results will be in the paper this week. Again, if any parents or coaches want to make life in the sports department easier, they can call in or e-mail us at any time with JV results. The sports department can be reached at 842-6400 or at sp****@gi************.com.
CALLER 2: Yeah, a complaint. I’m glad to see the field hockey team beat Carmel in a game, but humiliating them was not a good idea. Whoever the coach is is not teaching good sportsmanship when they leave an opponent without any dignity. They should have removed all their starters and played nothing but their backups and should have left the Carmel team with some dignity.
GREEN PHONE: Green Phone thanks you for the comment, Caller 2. The Phone consulted with staff writer Ana Patejdl, who covered the Sept. 15 game, and co-head coaches Adam and Erin Gemar to answer this one. By looking at the score, it might look like Gilroy played its starters the whole time. But that wasn’t the case. Just about all of Gilroy’s best players didn’t take part in the second half and the backup players were even playing different positions than they’re used to. Twelve of the 16 players on the roster scored. It just so happened that the Mustangs were amped for their first home league game and ended up playing their best game of the season – from the top of the lineup to the bottom. Everyone was on. Both teams were still having a good time on the field, even as the game became more and more lopsided so the Gilroy coaches weren’t really thinking about the score. The Gemars didn’t tell the girls not to score, but experimented with new plays to make it harder for them.
“It was not our intention to run up the score,” Erin Gemar said. “We definitely felt some remorse ourselves as coaches (afterward).”
Despite the outcome of the game, Erin Gemar said she received positive feedback from the Carmel coaches. Even so, she and Adam Gemar felt compelled to write a formal apology to them the next day.
“We can see how someone who read the headlines could have conclusions,” Erin Gemar said. “As far as actual players on the field, which is most important, I think that there were no hard feelings.”
The Green Phone would just like to add another point, which is, wouldn’t it have been more humiliating to Carmel if Gilroy went to such great lengths to not score? This could have been a more embarrassing situation.
Unfortunately, field hockey is a relatively new sport on the West Coast. Therefore, the talent gap from team to team can tend to be wide and these lopsided games can happen. But as the sport grows, there will be less of it and the Carmels of the world will get their revenge. In the meantime, rest assured that Gilroy was not trying to be unsportsmanlike.
