Dear Editor,
This letter is about what I saw at last week’s City Council meeting concerning the Miller Avenue rezoning. This is America. Everyone has a right to voice his or her opinions about this issue. I watched as Mayor Al Pinheiro pushed through the proposal for six large homes where only two had been along Miller. What a fiasco!
Our family purchased a lot across the street many years ago. We picked the size so that we could have a long driveway. All the lots in the immediate area are zoned R-1 except for one on which W.B. Stuart (the original owner) had two extra homes. The Alonzos now own this property.
There were about 35 Miller Avenue homeowners at the meeting where Mr. Robb Alonzo, a man of great integrity, presented a petition signed by local citizens and Miller Avenue residents opposing the rezoning. These are people who vote and have a strong interest in what’s happening in our wonderful town. These are the people who will vote for new council candidates. It’s time to get ride of the “deadbeats” and certain politicians. Maybe it’s even time for a recall.
We’re still waiting to have our sidewalks repaired and mistletoe cut off our city trees. We need to get rid of these politicians who “nickel and dime” us and raise our taxes. Remember who voted for this subdivision: Charles Morales, Paul Correa, Roland Velasco and Mr. Pinheiro.
At the meeting, one lady had her hand up to talk. She was never recognized, and all the while the mayor was talking about showing respect for the council members and threatening to have the audiences escorted out of the room. After a long wait, she stood up and had her say! The mayor then asked that she be escorted out of the room.
Then the council took up the downtown parking issue. With the loss of parking spaces, the downtown merchants also faced loss of their business. You had to be there! The council apparently knows what was best for the merchants as they didn’t ask for any ideas from them so they could all work together.
Still, there was one nice thing that happened at the meeting – the presentation of certificates to the 2005 Major Girls Softball All-Stars and their coaches who went to the World Series. It was a proud day for Gilroy and a nice moment for the parents and especially the grandparents.
But back to the Miller Avenue rezoning decision. There is no left turn signal on First and Miller Avenue – public knowledge for all including the council. e careful, your home or business may be next.
