Gilroy – Despite having played Gilroy Golf Course countless times, Gilroy’s Kristen Campos feels she never quite plays it the way she would like.

Still, the senior golfer shot an 8-over 44 Tuesday at a meet between the TCAL public schools, good enough to tie San Benito’s Erika Bardo for medalist honors.

As a team, Gilroy also took first place by a one point margin over San Benito in the Mustangs’ first home match. Gilroy’s team score was 202 while San Benito scored a 203. In a distant third was Salinas with 236, followed by Live Oak (265) and Alvarez (285).

“Yeah, I guess we have the advantage (because GCC is our home course), but no matter how many times I play this course, for so easy it is…,” she said, shaking her head.

Campos was frustrated by her mental mistakes, which caused her some penalty strokes, including one on the seventh hole for not moving her ball marker.

“I plan on doing better Thursday (against Monte Vista Christian),” she said. “I need to really practice my chipping.”

Also helping Gilroy to the team victory were Annie Cockerill (51), Rowena Tablias (53) and Carla Navarro (54).

Navarro, Stephanie Walker (57) and Katie Kimishura (68) all had personal best scores for the course.

“We won by one stroke and I guess that’s all you need,” said Gilroy head coach Kari Williams. “We’re going to be neck and neck with San Benito (for the rest of the season).”

Williams was happy to pull out such a close win after losing by three strokes to the ‘Balers last week and by four to Notre Dame Monday.

“It was nice to finally be on the other side of a close one,” she said.

San Benito’s Marissa Gutierrez was right behind Bardo and Campos with a 45. Allison Thomas’ 57 and Amanda Frey’s 60 also counted in San Benito’s team score.

Salinas’ Staci Patterson turned in the fourth-best score of 47.
