Hope that Community Can Support the Raley’s Grocery Shuttle for the Seniors

Dear Editor,

A news story and a column in Wednesday’s issue caught our attention. The first one is the headline that Nob Hill Foods is cutting the senior shuttle program and the second one is the title of Ben Anderson’s column “We Must Increase Our Stewardship of Our Community”. And his statement: “It will be a much better tomorrow when we start pulling on the same side of the rope.”

The seniors of Gilroy need the support of the community. They have supported our community in the past have been loyal customers of Nob Hill Foods for past decades. This is an excellent tradition started by Mike Bonfante. This is what Gilroy is about – a caring community for our local citizens in need. We cannot believe that Raley’s would abandon this tradition for purely a financial decision.

To the best of my knowledge, an excellent condition used (less than 20,000 miles) van cost about $20,000. If this is true, we would like to propose that the local community service clubs and individuals would band together and raise money with a matching sum from Raley’s to purchase a van and continue the senior shuttle service.

We will be the first to contribute to such a project. Ben Anderson speaks to a New Year’s resolution and we realize that this IS now and not then and we hope that IS now and tomorrow will be better than then.

Kai and Libby Lai, Gilroy

Perfect Time to Make an End-of-the-Year Gift to a Local Charitable Group

Dear Editor,

We appreciate the recent newspaper articles about local people in need and the generosity of our community. Like shopping locally, giving to a local organization enhances our community and those dollars produce immediate and visible results.

Now that all the presents have been opened and the ribbon and wrapping put away and after-holiday sales shopping done, readers can continue the warm and fuzzy good feelings a little bit longer by giving a final gift – or gifts – of the year (and a tax deduction, too) to make the New Year a happier one for those in need, both human and non-human, in our community.

The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center wishes to thank all in our community who have generously donated throughout the year to help us help the helpless – injured and orphaned native wildlife that would not have survived. We hope readers have enjoyed W.E.R.C.’s Animal of the Month stories that illustrate happy results from these donations.

All of us at W.E.R.C. would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year!

Sue Howell, Executive Director,

Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center
