Hey Red Phone, keep up the good work. Here’s a simple question.
Why does the Gilroy Post Office open at 9:15am?
Survey Says: Open at 9:15am

“Hey Red Phone, keep up the good work. Here’s a simple question. Why does the Gilroy Post Office open at 9:15am? Have you ever heard of a business opening 15 minutes past the hour? It’s absurd postal-service culture. Open the doors on the hour at 9 o’clock like every normal business in America; it makes no sense.”

Red Phone:

Good caller, Red Phone was interested to find out why the U.S. Post Office is not following suit with the American 9am to 5pm protocol. It contacted the Gilroy branch and was directed to PostMaster Penny Yates.

A survey was done through the post office’s computers that recorded the number of sales in 15-minute increments throughout the day, Yates said. Results from morning sales reported that most post office traffic doesn’t occur until after 9:15am, therefore there wasn’t a need to open the doors earlier.

However, if you need to drop off a package or pick up something prior to 9:15am, venture to the side door, which is open 5:30 to 9:30am, Monday through Friday, and 5:30 to 11:30am on Saturdays.

Yates added that there are mail centers at Nob Hill and Long’s Drugs on First Street, which are open extended hours for extra convenience. So, caller, the Post Office wasn’t trying to throw you off by opening a mere 15 minutes later, they’re just going with the flow of their local patrons.

Halt the Homes, we Need Schools

“If the city’s hands are tied financially by the state and they can’t require money of developers to build schools then maybe there should be a moratorium on building. Maybe then the developers would find a way to build schools. Why would anybody want to live here if there are no schools for their kids to go to?”

Red Phone:

Caller, Red Phone enjoyed fielding your calm and collected call. Such phone etiquette makes Red Phone’s day. So far as your suggestion, Red Phone is sure many agree that schools within close proximity to where one lives is on or near the top of the list when choosing a place to settle. A freeze on development until schools are erected to educate Gilroy’s future developers is an excellent recommendation.

Contacting the City Council with this idea and any other concerns about our great city is a step in the right direction. See page A4 for a list of phone numbers and e-mails to contact city officials.

Once again, thank you caller for no screaming, cursing or angry hang-ups. Your call was thoroughly enjoyed by Red Phone. Hopefully you will set a good example for the many passionate callers out there.

Readers:

Do you have a comment, complaint or compliment about an issue that affects Gilroy and its residents? Perhaps you’d like to suggest a turn signal at an intersection? Or maybe offer up a compliment for a good job done by city workers? Let the Red Phone know. But remember to leave a name and number when you call. The Red Phone won’t publish this information – it will only be used if verification is necessary. Contact the Red Phone at 842-9070 or e-mail
