Accidents snarl traffic; four injured

Gilroy – Traffic on U.S. 101 was tied up for more than 40 minutes Thursday after two separate accidents left four people with moderate injuries.

John A Sempadian, 53, of Potter Valley was heading northbound at Middle Avenue at 1:45pm when he heard a loud noise he believed was his tiring blowing out.

Sempadian’s 1989 Ford Bronco began fishtailing and he lost control as he tried to avoid other vehicles. The truck moved into the dirt center divider and overturned coming to rest in the northbound lanes.

Sempadian’s passenger, 77-year-old Artoon A. Sempadian suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Region Medical Center of San Jose.

Two northbound lanes were closed as police cleared the scene.

About 90 minutes later, three people were injured in a second collision north of Masten Avenue.

Francine Abruzzese, 34, of Seven Hills, Ohio, was entering northbound U.S. 101 from Masten Avenue when she struck a concrete curb and sign.

Abruzzese’s vehicle continued into the northbound lanes and collided with the front of 71-year-old Morgan Hill resident Ilse Bass’s car.

Both vehicles spun out of control into the center median.

Abruzzese suffered a laceration near her left eye and broke a finger in the crash. She was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Bass suffered a broken right knee cap and chest pain and was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. Her 15-year-old passenger suffered cuts to his cheeks and forehead and was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
