Las Animas Bathrooms
“Why does Las Animas Park have only one restroom open after 4:30pm . With all of the activities going on at the park, shouldn’t both of the restrooms be open? The one that was opened was in terrible shape.”
Red Phone:
Caller, the one open, one closed situation is no accident but a middle of the road solution chosen by local officials, according to City Operations Manager Carla Ruigh.
“When the bathrooms are left open at night they get vandalized,” she said. “However, we hate to leave the park users without any bathrooms at all, so what we do is leave open the one set that is constructed a little more durably than the other bathrooms and we close the ones that are more subject to vandalism. Our compromise is to leave one set open.”
So good caller, it appears that like most things in life these days, the obnoxious behavior of a few ruin it for the majority.
What’s up with the cones
“I have a question. There are new cones on north Monterey between Luchessa Avenue and 10th Street preventing people from making a U-turn. It sure is a pain if you want to get to Luchessa from northbound Monterey you have to go all the way to 10th Street, make a U-turn at the light, then drive back to Luchessa. It doesn’t seem very smart.”
Red Phone:
Well caller, you are right. We went to Parks and Facilities Manager Bill Headley, who said the traffic cones were mistakenly left there by construction workers and should have been removed at the end of the working day. The contractor was notified Friday and instructed to remove them.
“They mistakenly put the cones in as long term when they should have just been temporary,” said Headley.
So by the time you read this, they should be gone. If they’re still there, give the Red Phone a call and we’ll get on it.

“This is a comment about the illegal signs on telephone poles. I had to laugh when I read it … the Red Phone could have saved a lot of ink if it had just said the Gilroy Police Department knows it’s illegal but doesn’t enforce any of the sign violations. If you can tell me of an instance where police have called people and told them the signs have to be taken down or fined them, I’d be really surprised. … Nothing’s going to happen. Thank you.”
Red Phone:
Caller, the first response was to a question that asked if it was illegal, and we listed the code. Now, if you’re asking whether police should spend their time visiting poles, taking down numbers and ordering residents to remove them, then I can save you time. Do you want GPD spending their time that way? I suppose they could put a Community Service Officer on the case, but that’d be just about all they’d do. Readers: It is your responsibility to remove all posted signs. Please keep Gilroy clean.
