Dear Editor,
In her otherwise sensible June 13 column, Lisa Pampuch asks why Measure E, which supposedly had a purpose, failed with 55 percent while Measure A, which could be spent on anything, only required 50 percent.
Measure E was a parcel tax, which is an unfair tax on the middle class. The millionaire in the mansion on the hill pays the same as the guy who owns the condo on the third floor, but the apartment renter is essentially not affected. Measure A was a sales tax (the only fair way to tax since it’s based on one’s ability to spend.)
A simple majority of voters approved, the two-thirds requirement for a property tax. Myself, I’d like to see a three-fourths requirement for anything going to public “education”; that would help cure the disease known as the teacher’s union
