Gilroy – The script doesn’t seem to change for the Gavilan College women’s volleyball team. And yet it’s not from lack of effort that the Rams are losing.

The bottom line was a 30-24, 30-14, 30-20 loss Wednesday to Coast Conference North Division co-leader De Anza College at Bud Ottmar Memorial Gym.

Once again, Gavilan did an excellent job of digging and impressed an opposing coach in this non-conference matchup. But Rams’ coach Stephanie Pascucci would rather get a few wins to give the second-year program more confidence.

“Their defense is phenomenal,” Dons’ coach Dawnis Guevara said. “It’s fun to play them. They have a lot of good players, and you have to be ready for the second or third hit.”

The Rams (4-11) were in the first and third games, but were ultimately done in by the net play of De Anza (12-6). The Dons got a combined 29 kills from Mary Kate McCloskey and Jasmin Aliifua. Mandi Fazio led with 15 digs, and setter Alisa Vinokour had 42 assists and three aces.

Barbie Csore had seven kills and three digs for Gavilan. Brianna Balanesi had 15 digs. Malie Ka’anapu had 11 digs and 20 assists.

“We always do a good job of digging but we need the big hitter,” Rams’ coach Stephanie Pascucci said. “All I can ask is that the girls play hard and give it their all. For the most part, they are doing that. They are getting balls they didn’t get before.”
