Gilroy – The girls’ volleyball team has been arguably the busiest of the Gilroy High athletic teams this fall.

After two Tri-County Athletic League encounters during the past week, GHS is back in action today in the annual Mustang Classic at Bob Hagen Gymnasium.

“We’ve got some good teams and it should be a competitive tournament,” said GHS coach Sue Grogan, whose team is 9-11 overall.

The Mustang Classic was started by former coach Sam Navarez as a way of bringing in some competitive teams to Gilroy and raising money for the volleyball team.

“It was something that helped them get better by competing with schools from different areas,” Gilroy athletic director Jack Daley said. “Everything (earned) from the tournament goes directly to volleyball.”

Twelve teams are divided into three brackets. All three brackets will play concurrently in the tournament that begins at 8am.

Gilroy’s opener will be against Independence. It will succeed the Mt. Madonna-Half Moon Bay matchup. Each team in the brackets will face each other.

The second bracket features powerful St. Ignatius, Branham, Pacific Grove and Watsonville. The Mustangs participated in the St. Ignatius Tournament last month. Mt. Pleasant, Monterey, Scotts Valley and Everett Alvarez comprise the third bracket.
