Gilroy High and Valley Christian, two teams with a combined record of 27-6 heading into a matchup on the softball diamond Thursday in Gilroy, needed extra innings to decide a winner.
With the International tiebreaker in effect to start the 10th inning – a runner starts the inning on second base – the Warriors pushed across the eventual deciding run to eke out a narrow 4-3 victory over the Mustangs.
“It was just an excellent, excellent game,” GHS manager Julie Berggren said. “It’s unfortunate that we have another loss in the loss column but that is probably the best team we will face from here on out.”
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third only to watch the Mustangs (15-3) put up a three-spot in their half of the inning.
Celeste Mendoza led off the frame with a double and later scored on a passed ball. Sarah Lira chased in the second run with a RBI fielder’s choice and Dani Hemeon knocked in the third of the inning with a base hit.
The Warriors tied matters in the fifth at 3-3 where it stood until the 10th.
“The girls played hard,” Berggren said.
