Gilroy’s girls basketball team couldn’t find its groove in the Mitty New Year’s Eve Tourney Thursday night, losing its first round contest to the host school 69-20.
“I want to stop short of saying we were intimidated, but we had turnovers tonight that really weren’t typical,” GHS coach James Wilkins said.
Point guard Vanessa Wilkins had 10 points to lead Gilroy scorers while freshman forward Chelsea Hill had four.
Mitty was lifted by having several taller, stronger players on the inside, according to coach Wilkins.
“They’re good, they’re deep and they keep coming at you. And they’re big,” he said. “They were tough. Not so much their shooting as much as it was their power play inside. They capitalized on mistakes.”
The coach added that Gilroy played well defensively for a stretch in the first half, but never found its rhythm on offense.
Gilroy is now 4-5 on the season.
The team will try to rebound in its second round contest today at 5:30 p.m. against Davis. Davis lost its first round contest on a buzzer-beater to Wilcox. The game will once again be held at Mitty High School.
