Light in Effect:

The traffic signal at Wren Avenue and Third Street has been turned on, and city officials are reminding drivers that the intersection should no longer be treated as a four-way stop.

“People still are driving it as if its a four-way stop,” City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said. “We’d like to let everyone know that the rules of the road apply – if it’s red, you should wait until the light changes to green.”

Three cheers for mr. vickroy

“Cheers go out to Mr. Pat Vickroy for single-handedly getting our kids in Gilroy outside and jumping rope. Mr. Vickroy teaches PE at my son’s school (Luigi Aprea) and various other elementary schools in town. Not only is my son and all his friends jumping rope like crazy each and every day, but all the neighborhood kids that go to other local schools are jumping rope too.

I love driving around town after school and seeing all the kids outside jumping rope. Mr. Vickroy has put together his Jump Rope Challenge – a way for the kids to earn their own jump rope and name on the wall of fame.

It is fantastic to see the kids outside, getting exercise and having fun at a great pastime. Thank you Mr. Vickroy.”

Red Phone:

Thank you for your kind comment good caller. Red Phone contacted Mr. Vickroy to find out how he got his students in such a jumping frenzy. He said students have previously participated in the American Heart Association’s “Jump Rope for Heart” programs, which raise money for the program, but he wanted his kids to skip rope just for the

Sheer joy of jumping.

“The reason I started was because a lot of dodgeball was being played, and the principal said ‘if you don’t want to play dodge ball, come up with an alternative,” Vickroy said.

His alternative was exercise paired with incentives. If students could jump two minutes without missing or double-hopping, they would earn their own jump ropes. If they could go five minutes, they would earn a set of double-Dutch ropes for their classroom.

“The kids really got into it; they were just going crazy jumping, they won the five-minute challenges and so wanted something else.”

Vickroy created a responsibility scale that graded students on how well they took care of themselves and others, he said.

“If students can jump for seven minutes without fail, they can earn an additional rope to give to someone who they thought might not be able to earn a rope,” he explained.

Vickroy was paying for all the ropes himself at first, but after much success he couldn’t keep up the expense. A local Parent’s Clubs came to the rescue, saying anything that helps kids improve physically and socially they would definitely endorse. So Red Phone would like to send some more love Mr. Vickroy’s way and to parent’s clubs, facility and last but not least, the students for a job well done. Keep up the good work.

Spare the air coverage

“Hey was wondering if maybe you guys in addition to having the weather and temperature you could also post the spare the air advisory that they have on TV.

They have had about 30 days now and there is nothing in the paper about that. You can pick up the information on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Web site.”

Red Phone:

Well caller, not a bad idea but the advisory mentioned during the evening news is past deadline for the weather page. However, if Red Phone does hear of a spare the air day in time for print it will send the message along to the proper editors.
