The Gilroy Browns continued their dominance at the Junior Midget level with 12-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Salinas Cardinals.
After three scoreless quarters, the Browns broke through on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Freddy Mireles to Henry Gallegos.
The extra point was missed and the Browns had the lead 6-0 with five minutes left in the game.
After the ensuing kickoff, Salinas started from its 30-yard line only to run into a tough Browns defense that forced a fumble and recovered by Devin Scatena.
The offense went to work with Kevin “KO” Onyejekwe taking the handoff and scoring on 25-yard touchdown run to make it 12-0.
The defense led by Anthony Corral, Joseph Avendano, Henry Gallegos, Darren Santos, Juan Villarreal, Brendan Lerma, Devin Scatena, Christopher McCain, Onyejekwe, Mireles, Anthony Lopez, Matthew Olivier, Eddie Prado, Connor Doyle and Charles Good helped stop Salinas’ high-powered wishbone offense. The 5-0 Junior Midgets will take on the 0-5 Andrew Hill Raiders on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Gilroy High.
–The Junior Pee Wee team entered its first game into the win column after a come-from-behind 22-20 victory against the Salinas Cardinals.
The Browns exploded to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter, taking the lead on touchdowns from Brandon Bumanlag and two extra point kicks – which are worth two points in Pop Warner. Noah Laine also had tough runs on the scoring drives.
However, the Cardinals answered back with 20 unanswered points, to claim a 20-16 lead with five minutes left in the game.
The Browns began a crucial drive on their own 15-yard line, and moved the ball successfully to the 44- yard line with plays by Laine and Bumanlag and with a great catch by Keoni Calimpong-Dominguez.
Faced with a fourth-down-and-six, the Browns called a pass play that caught Salinas off guard. Laine threw the ball to a wide-open Jaime Martinez, who hauled in the catch and took it all the way in for a score.
The kick was not converted this time and left the score 22-20 Gilroy Browns.
The Cardinals were able to get the ball down to the Browns’ 10-yard line but the Browns defense was up to the task and did not allow them to score.
