Gilroy – Nominations for the California 2006-2007 “Teacher of the Year” award are being accepted through March 1. Teachers, students and parents can nominate any of the state’s more than 350,000 accredited teachers by writing in 250 words or less on what make them special. Nominees will be judged on their ability to motivate students, their special talents, and their contribution to their school and students. The award will include $1,000 to the winning teacher and a $500 grant to their school.

Work abroad in Gilroy’s sister city

Gilroy – A Coordinator of International Relations is needed to strengthen sister city relations, represent Gilroy at events and socials, arrange international travel, build cross cultural relationships, and teach English and American culture in Gilroy’s sister city of Takko-Machi, Japan. The contract is good for one year and includes good salary, medical benefits, a furnished apartment, and travel expenses. The position starts Oct. 13. Learn to deal with loss

Gilroy – Are you grieving the loss of a loved one? Experiencing empty nest syndrome? Suffered a divorce or a financial loss? You’re not alone. Aggie Ternasky, a grief counselor for 15 years will address the grief process and will provide tangible tools for coping with loss. This free seminar and breakfast is 9am to noon, Feb. 24.

Study Spanish in Spain

Gilroy – Learn or improve your Spanish language skills while you study and travel this summer through the Gavilan College summer program in Sevilla, Spain. Students will earn up to five units of university-transferable college credit while living with a host family. The trip runs from June 3 through 30, and costs about $1,500 plus airfare. An orientation meeting will be held at 9:30am, Feb. 24 to provide students an opportunity to learn more about the program.

Fireman’s ball raises funds

Gilroy – An elegant evening to raise funds for the firefighter’s auxiliary emergency fund is scheduled for the evening of March 3 at 6pm at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. No-host cocktails start the event followed by a 7pm buffet dinner. From 8:30 to 9pm, a raffle is held followed by dancing until 1 am. Tickets are $80 per couple or $40 for single.

Bach, blues, swing, jazz and more

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Music Department and South Valley Symphony present the South Valley’s most talented musicians: Maria Amirkhanian, John Garcia, Art Juncker and the Gavilan College Performance Ensemble, Alberto Marques, Candace Fazzio, Nate Pruitt and Primary Colors, and the winner of the 2nd Annual Marion Filice Piano Competition in Bach to Blues, Friday, March 9 at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Theater; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Proceeds benefit the Gavilan College Music Department. Tickets are on sale at the Gavilan College Bookstore, Porcella’s Music, and Carole’s Hallmark in Gilroy, Booksmart in Morgan Hill and the Gavilan College Briggs Building in Hollister.

Prices are $30 for V.I.P. tickets (includes premium seating and a gift bag), $15 for general admission, and $10 for seniors/students. Advance purchase is recommended. Tickets will also be sold at the theater box office starting at 6pm the day of the performance.
