Football fans who plan on partying hard while watching the Super Bowl football game Feb. 2 should be sure they have a safe ride home after the game, Gilroy police advise.
“If you plan on drinking, plan for a ride home with a sober driver,” Gilroy Police Officer Rene Arbizu said. “Whether your team wins or loses, you’ll always get the ‘W’ by not drinking and driving.”
Super Bowl LIV, which features the San Francisco 49ers versus the Kansas City Chiefs, falls on Sunday, Feb. 2. The Gilroy Police Department will increase patrols that day and evening, ready to flag those suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, the police department said in a press release.
Police also remind drivers that driving under the influence of anything that impairs is illegal, including prescriptions, over-the-counter or illicit drugs and marijuana. If you take prescription drugs, be mindful of side effects, especially if there is a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, police warned.
“If you’re hosting a watch party, be a team player and have plenty of snacks and non-alcoholic drinks available for designated sober drivers,” reads the Gilroy Police press release. “If a designated sober driver decides to have a drink, make sure someone else who hasn’t been drinking is available to come pick everyone up. Anyone who sees a drunk driver should call 911.”
Even if you are planning on walking to a bar or party for the Super Bowl, police said walking impaired can be dangerous. Impaired pedestrians should aim to have someone sober walk home with them.
Funding for enhanced DUI enforcement on Super Bowl Sunday is provided to Gilroy Police by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
