There is something special about seeing a city come alive.

On a recent Thursday evening, Downtown Gilroy was doing just that. Monterey Street was filled with music, families, friends, children, food and plenty of people simply enjoying being together.

That is what Downtown Live is all about.

The free summer concert series, presented by the Gilroy Downtown Business Association, brings live music to downtown on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. This year’s series featured a lineup ranging from Riff Riot and James Durbin and the Lost Boys to the Chicano All Stars, Alex Lucero and a Bruno Mars tribute.

But Downtown Live is about much more than music. It gives people a reason to come downtown.

And once they are there, they are likely to grab something to eat, stop for a drink, browse a shop or discover a business they may not have visited before.

Downtowns don’t thrive simply because buildings and businesses are there. They thrive when people have a reason to visit, linger and return.

Gilroy’s downtown has a lot going for it. It is walkable, historic and filled with restaurants, shops, services and entertainment. Events such as Downtown Live help turn that description into something people can experience.

They also build community.

I watched people who might not otherwise cross paths stand together, dance together and enjoy the same music. Families brought their children. Friends gathered after work. People walked the sidewalks and ran into neighbors they hadn’t seen in a while.

A successful community isn’t just a place where people live. It is a place where people feel connected to one another.

And that is one of the most valuable things these events provide.

Downtown Live also demonstrates the importance of partnerships. The Gilroy Downtown Association organizes the series with support from sponsors, local businesses and the community. That doesn’t happen overnight. It takes investment, creativity and, perhaps most importantly, people willing to show up.

And Gilroy residents have shown up.

As the city continues to think about the future of its downtown, events like Downtown Live should be viewed as more than entertainment. They are part of the city’s economic and community-building strategy.

A vibrant downtown creates a sense of place. It gives residents something to be proud of and visitors a reason to come back.

The music eventually stops, the chairs are folded up and Monterey Street returns to normal. But the memory of a good evening downtown lingers.

That’s the real value of events like Downtown Live.

They remind us that a downtown isn’t simply a collection of storefronts and parking spaces. It is a gathering place—a place where a community can come together and celebrate itself.

And that is worth keeping the music playing.
