More than 200 people gathered at Gilroy’s Veterans Memorial Building on Saturday, May 29 for he dedication of the World War II Memorial.
It was an honor and pleasure to welcome Gilroy’s Company B 184th Infantry and all World War II veterans. Each received a Certificate of Appreciation for their service to America. The impressive Honor Guard marched into the hall and presented the colors. Rev. John Coleman gave the invocation and praised the veterans.
After the Pledge of Allegiance, former Miss California Danielle Coney sang the National Anthem.
Master of Ceremonies Wayne Cegelske welcomed the WW II veterans and guests. He introduced the Commanders of Veterans of Foreign Wars 6309, American Legion 217, American Legion 669 and Gilroy GI Forum and thanked the posts for sponsoring the event.
Department President Gwen Rankin of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, accompanied by her husband Rick Rankin, traveled to Gilroy for the special event and were thanked by all.
Supervisor Don Gage spoke on the sacrifices and achievements of the men and women of World War II. Gage was a World War II baby and is very active with veteran programs. Mayor Al Pinheiro praised and thanked all World War II veterans.
Lisa Meghan of the United States Army spoke on service people and their pledge and loyalty to maintain peace for all. Escorting Lisa was Councilman Charlie Morales, her proud Dad.
Miss California Danielle Coney then sang God Bless The USA to a very receptive audience. President of the VFW Auxiliary JoAnn Baker and Aurora Viarengo assisted by Edna Floros decorated the Veterans Building with Buddy and Flanders field poppies and American flags. American Legion Auxiliary members Garcia Hunter and Mildred Braquet presented WWII veterans with the Certificates of Appreciation. Lunch was prepared by Carl Page and his crew assisted by VFW Auxiliary members.

It took 60 years to recognize a great generation. We are delighted to have participated in the Dedication Day in Gilroy.
