Academy begins next Tuesday

Gilroy – The city’s annual Neighborhood Academy begins March 13 with “Building a Bridge to the Future: Connecting the Old to the New,” a free presentation by city traffic engineer Don Dey, and Nancy Wright of South County Housing’s Downtown Cannery Project. Spanish translation is provided.

The Academy takes place at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., between 5:45 and 7:30pm. Networking begins at 5:30pm, and raffle prizes are available. A light dinner will be provided. The session is the first of three in the academy: “Domestic Violence – It’s Closer Than you Think!” and “The Neighborhood’s Next Generation: What You Can do For the Youth, and What They Can do For You,” will follow March 20 and March 27. Attendees who attend all three sessions will be given Recognition Certificates March 27, by Mayor Al Pinheiro.

Administrators get their week

Gilroy – This week was proclaimed Week of the School Administrator by the California Department of Education. At last Thursday’s board meeting, Linda Piceno, assistant superintendent of human resources, read a proclamation extending the honor to Gilroy administrators. The group being honored includes superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, assistant principals and district support staff, among others.

From March 4 to March 10, “the administrative leaders of the Gilroy Unified School District shall be recognized for their outstanding efforts and be extended special gratitude for the service to education they provide to this community,” the proclamation read.

Speakers at St. Mary Parish

Gilroy – St. Mary Parish Lenten Speaker series presents people who work against injustice, violence, and poverty around the world. n Thursday, March 22, 7pm, Mike Monroe will give us the little ways we can help sustain our earth. Come and see portions of the film “An Inconvenient Truth” and talk about caring for the Earth. Meet in the church.

Elks Lodge fashion show

Gilroy – Elks Lodge No. 1567 Fashion Show, “Springtime in the Rose Garden,” is Saturday and will feature fashions and accessories from local boutiques and stores. This event begins with no-host cocktails at 11am, luncheon at noon and fashion show from 1 to 2:30pm.

All proceeds benefit the Elks philanthropic efforts to help crippled and disabled children. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 10, from 10am to 1pm for $25 per person at the Elk’s Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway. Tickets will also be sold after Feb.10 and may be picked up, Mon. through Fri., 9am to 1pm at the Lodge Office. See Joyce or Sandy.

Rock out with SV Civic Theatre

Gilroy – Teens will be performing “Schoolhouse Rock,” based on the award winning ABC-TV educational animated series directed by Carol Harris produced by Tracy VanGundy and Dave Leon with musical direction by Carol Harris.

The show opens Friday, March 9 and runs at 8pm Fridays and Saturdays March 16, 17, 23, 24, 30, and 31. There will be two matinees at 2pm, March 17 and 24 (ASL Interpreter at this performance). All shows will be held at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road.

Take a swing at baseball

Gilroy – Gilroy “Heat” American Legion summer baseball team will be holding open tryouts 9am Sunday at Gilroy High. The tryout is open to all 14 to 17 year olds and cost is $10 for the tryouts.

South County Horseman meet

Morgan Hill – The San Martin Horsemen’s Association will hold its March meeting 7pm, Friday, March 9 at the Morgan Hill Grange, 40 East Fourth St. A presentation will be made on NATRC. Bring dish for potluck, everyone welcome.

County offers free tax help

San Jose – The county is encouraging low-income, elderly, limited-English-speaking and disabled adults to take advantage of a free tax service coordinated by the Internal Revenue Service.

Four sites in the county are offering the service, with help from volunteers trained by the IRS. Some volunteers can provide languages other than English.

Residents have until April 17 to file their taxes. The usual due date, April 15, falls on a Sunday this year, and April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C.

The four locations for free tax service are:

n Campbell Library; 77 Harrison Ave., Campbell; Thursdays, 6 to 8pm, Saturdays, 9 to 3:30pm.

n Cupertino Library, 10800 Torre Ave., Cupertino; Saturdays, 10am to 2pm. Call for an appointment at (408) 223-1445. Walk-ins accepted.

n Milpitas Community Library; 40 North Milpitas Blvd., Milpitas; Saturdays, 10 to 2pm.

Passport Weekend for wine lovers
