Amber is a petite one-year-old tortie cat who has been spayed. She is very sweet, friendly and good with other cats. She also loves to be held and pet. She has been at the San Martin Animal Shelter since June and would love to find a forever home.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting a cat, there’s no time like right now.

The Santa Clara County Animal Shelter in San Martin is at an all-time feline high these days, according to volunteer Pat Dorrell. Roughly 190 cats are in need of a good, loving home.

“I’ve been doing this about a year and it was bad last fall because you go through kitten season, but from what I’m hearing this is the worst it’s ever been in terms of overpopulation,” said Dorrell. “Anybody looking for a cat should come visit.”

While cats are getting adopted, she noted, new arrivals are keeping up with the outgoing.

“The problem is that as soon as they get adopted, more come in,” Dorrell explained.

Choices come in all ages, sizes and colors, she noted.

Adoptions fees are $90 for cats and $100 for kittens. The fee includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip ID implantation and registration, age-appropriate vaccinations, de-fleaing and de-worming, FIV/FeLV testing and a bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food. Fees for the above services would cost well over $500 at a private veterinarian.

Santa Clara County shelters euthanized approximately 14,000 cats in 2005 at a cost of approximately $2.4 million, according to the Humane Society of Silicone Valley Animal Control Center.

For those who are unable to adopt, donations of food, toys, bedding and old towels are much appreciated. New volunteers are also needed and welcome. Volunteer orientations take place at 1 p.m. the second Saturday of every month.
