Dear Editor,

It is a shame to see a letter such as Mr. Johnson’s actually enticing parents and students to have complete disregard for authority. What example is he setting for other kids and families? I grew up in Gilroy, went to all Gilroy schools and learned that I had to do what the teachers said and what the school board decided (especially since my Dad was a member!) just as I was expected to obey law enforcement.

It wasn’t always what I wanted but that was understood. All too often I see kids with no respect for authority, personal property or other individuals. Isn’t that just what Mr. Johnson is promoting?

I understand that he may not agree but to “straight-up” encourage the cheerleaders to do what they want anyway sure seems to promote the disrespect.

I live across the street from a high school and I see it everyday … the kids foul language, disrespect for other property while they kick cars, etc. It would also be much like going 80mph on the freeway regardless of the 55mph speed limit because you don’t like it. That just doesn’t work. I’ve wondered where this attitude began. I think I now know.

I certainly hope Mr. Johnson will re-consider his encouragement to disregard authority and find another, more appropriate way to resolve this indifference.
