Saccullo’s glass and surplus store, which has been here for 56 years, is leaving town because owner Mary Saccullo has decided to retire and sold the Monterey Street building.
The vintage store was always colorful, so much so that pending Hollywood movie chose it as a location last year. The goods are being sold by Garlic City Auctions, some at the Sixth Street auction house and the rest the Saturday at Saccullos at 7648 Monterey St.
“It’s been bittersweet,” said Mary. “It’s like losing my husband all over again. These were his businesses.”
She won’t reveal who has bought the building, but promised it’s a business Gilroy will love. “It’s from one Gilroy family to another Gilroy family,” she said. “All I’ll say is hometown heroes.”
First on her retirement bucket list: she’s going to find a Gilroy community organization that needs a volunteer and then she’ll spend more time with her son and family in Pleasanton.
