Ryan Slater’s confidence going into the San Diego Junior Masters tournament this week proved to be more than wishful thinking as the 10-year-old amateur golfer secured 15th place.

Going into the two-day event at Carlton Oaks Golf Course in San Diego, the Gilroy native predicted he would finish in the top-15.

“I thought the tournament was really fun,” Slater said. “The course was pretty challenging. It was pretty hilly and had water on it. A lot of bunkers and water.”

Shooting 82 on both days, Slater finished with a final score of 164. Remarkably, Slater had only one double bogey in the tournament, proving to be a model of consistency by making one birdie and keeping everything else to a par or bogey.

“I don’t think I had a three-putt both days,” he said. “I didn’t really hit a lot of bad shots, it was just kind of my chipping.”

Practicing at Torrey Pines Golf Course on Thursday, Slater expects to perform well in next week’s Callaway Junior World Championships, which will feature many of the best amateur youth golfers in the world.

Until then, Slater has couple more pressing priorities.

“I’m going to Sea World, then practice and more practice,” he said. “I’m hoping to do really well at Junior Worlds.”

The three-day event will have a cut after the first two days, with the final round being played Thursday.
