Despite early losing streaks, coach K.C. Adams said his Anchorpoint Christian boys and girls basketball teams are heading in the right direction.
The boys entered Thursday’s game against Monterey Bay Academy at 1-3, with a season-opening 77-36 win versus Liberty Baptist followed by closes losses to Eastside College Prep, Anzar and Greenfield.
When asked about their progress, Adams said the proof was in the defeats.
“We’re playing tough against some teams that are going to get us ready for the CCS (Central Coast Section) playoffs,” he said. “We’re playing the bigger schools that keep beating us in CCS. We want to beat them this year.”
With three of five starters returning from an defeated 2006-2007 squad that won a second straight Coastal Athletic League title, the Warriors are once again in position for big things this year.
Adams said that goes well beyond league.
“We’ve gotten used to winning league, but we always lose early in the CCS. This is a team that can turn the corner,” he added.
The Warriors have been playing with quickness this year as seen in their leading scorer Adrian Rodriguez. He plays alongside a solid front court featuring juniors Colton Minyard and Ryan Lasondak, who led the team in rebounding last year.
“They’ve both been big for us this year,” Adams said. “They’re both having good seasons and helping our younger guys come along.”
Like the boys, the lady Warriors (0-2) also are showing promise through veteran leadership.
Junior forward/center Chelsey Urbanksi is back after a 2006-2007 season that saw her named the league’s most valuable player – a rarity for sophomores.
Adams said her full potential is yet to be realized.
“Chelsey is only getting better,” he added. “She’s one of the best players in the CCS and helping everyone around her get better.”
Her supporting cast includes guards Monique Muniz and Ellen Pierce; and Osuna sisters Kristy and Adrinna at forward and center, respectively.
“This team is going to take time to get going but once they do, they’re going to do big things,” Adams said.
The girls’ next game is Tuesday against Leadership Christian, while the boys play Kehillah Jewish on Monday.
