I thought I would take the time to give our “connected” residents in the “connected” city of Gilroy and update on my quest to somehow get an Internet connection that is faster than dial up. While residents in the area where Merritt G. Billington lives will not benefit much from this, residents in the northwest quad will. By the way Mr. Billington, I do have a “phone hook up” on Verizon. Verizon, can’t get my “phone hook up” to talk with my computer any faster than a pair of drag racing snails.
Mr. Eads raises some good points in his recent letter to the editor regarding the Cingular tower that was shot down by Mr. Cote, and his army of NW quad residents who get more radiation from a 60W light bulb. Imagine a company that finally decided to take the first step in providing us with decent Internet connections, being shot down by the very same people who (probably) quietly complain that they can’t have it. That was smart. Why should any company even bother now, knowing that the “not in my back yard” attitude is alive and well?
Michelle Hatfield’s story in the Dispatch about DSL service was well done I thought, but did more to tell us what we can’t get, as opposed to what our options really are. I loved the part about how Charter was going to have everyone in Gilroy ready for a high speed connection by Thanksgiving. A simple look at the calendar, and my bathroom scale tell me that Thanksgiving has come and gone, and my pair of race snails are still at it.
Out of all the research I have done in my quest to attain DSL or an otherwise high-speed connection to the Internet, about the only option available to the residents in the NW quad, is South Valley Internet. They have an antenna based service that is about to be ready for customers in NW Gilroy, and I suggest that anyone wanting high-speed service to call them. You will be put on a waiting list, as it isn’t quite ready to go yet, but they have been to my home to do a “site survey” and according to them the service should be ready very soon.
To Steve Owen: Thanks for the vote for mayor. If elected, I will make you my Internet engineer in charge of “connecting” Gilroy. The last person who broadcasted that failed miserably.
