‘Animal Rights’ Folks Go Way Overboard on Silly Proposed Law

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank Pete Keesling for his May 22 piece regarding AB 1634, the most inane, stupid idea to come out of Sacramento in my memory. This bill is the personification of the “animal rights” people who firmly believe no one should be allowed to own a pet. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals employees have been arrested for “rescuing” dogs from shelters to then kill the dogs and put them in dumpsters. If this is the “help” animals get from these organizations, please don’t let them help me, I enjoy living.

Many people will not willingly abide by such a law, rightfully believing they are paying too much in taxes already and whether or not they own a dog or cat is not something that should concern the police, the city, the country or the state. This law is an invasion of privacy and totally disregards an owner’s property rights. Will the next inane law say I can only plant yellow roses?

We have had a dog or dogs in our household for 35 years. They have brought us a great amount of pleasure and love. Our sons grew up with a dog which had the best karate of all. They still tell Jed stories, more than a decade since his passing. We have a neutered male, but we decided when he was neutered and for what reason. That was our decision to make, not the state, nor the county, nor the city, or even our neighbors or friends, but ours.

A Shame When a Business Breaks a Verbal Agreement

Dear Editor,

I have lived in Gilroy my entire life and recently ran into something that really disturbs me. I went into a verbal contract with a local company. This was not for a huge project but something that was extremely important to me and my family. I did all negotiating over the phone, made my reservations and even asked if I needed to call back to confirm prior to the date – which they indicated I did not have to do. So I assumed (bad decision) that everything would go as planned.

Well the day came for the services to be fulfilled and nothing happened. I did not receive a phone call and nobody showed up. I called the company to see what the problem was. I always give people the benefit of the doubt and again assumed they made a mistake and would make up for it. I did not receive an answer. Isn’t a verbal contact as binding as a written one? I was brought up thinking that a man/woman was as good as his/her word and that when someone gives you their word you have to trust that. Well, times they are a changin’ …

I am hoping by getting this word out that businesses see this and they learn how to be trustworthy and good for their word.
