Gilroy High wins easily, defeating Monterey 10-0
Gilroy – Russhelle Preeshl made Senior Night a night to remember.

Preeshl had a season-high four goals and Gilroy closed out its Mission Trail Athletic League home season with yet another decisive victory, breezing past Monterey 10-0 at Garcia-Elder Complex.

One of 10 seniors on the team, Preeshl went from passer one day earlier to scorer Wednesday. Against North Salinas Tuesday, Preeshl had four assists.

“I can’t believe the season is almost over,” Preeshl said. “Everything went by so fast. We worked well together and played pretty good considering the different lineups we used.”

Co-coaches Adam and Erin Gemar played all 10 seniors for the first 15 minutes of the game. And yet it was junior Amanda Spellman who scored the first goal 4:22 into the game, following a shot off the goalie’s pads. The seniors were also on the field for the final 12 minutes of the game with Stephanie Glenn moving from the net to the front line and junior Caitlyn Pierotti into the goal.

Whatever lineup the Gemars used, the Mustangs (12-4-1 overall, 11-0 MTAL) dominated. Five different girls scored during a 5-0 first half.

Preeshl got her first goal with 24:21 remaining in the first half. Kelly Perkins had her first of two assists on Preeshl goals. Laura Spellman scored the third goal with Jennifer Rose getting the assist. Dana Schoeneman scored with four minutes left with Lindsey Valadez and Laura Spellman getting assists. Erin Magill capped the first-half scoring 19 seconds before halftime with Amanda Vasquez getting the assist.

Preeshl scored three goals in the second half with Magill getting one goal and two assists. Perkins had a goal and an assist, and Megan McAvoy and Glenn had other second-half assists. All goal scorers in the game except the Spellmans were seniors.

“We had lots of good passing up and down the sidelines,” Preeshl said. “We worked hard and controlled the game.”

Erin Gemar had mixed emotions as she watched the onslaught. On one hand, she would have liked to see the seniors distribute the ball to more players. On the other hand, she knows the team needs to be “more selfish” during CCS playoffs.

“The same girls are finishing which is good, but it would be nice if they got the ball to others when we have the big lead,” Gemar said. “Still, we’re going to need them like that in the CCS playoffs. The seniors played well. It was their night.”

Gilroy finishes the regular season Friday at York. With the league crown already locked up, the only drama will be if and when the Mustangs reach 100 goals against MTAL opponents whom they have outscored 94-1.
