“Anything Goes” is an original musical comedy that opened on Broadway in 1934 and starred Ethel Merman, then Patty LePone and then Joel Gray. It went on to three revivals winning awards through the years of movies, television and stage. The plot is outrageous and silly, but it has Cole Porter’s music including “De-Lovely,” “I Get kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “Easy To Love” and “Anything Goes”–and a super talented cast.
Katie Jaime as Reno Sweeney is the whole package: she sings, taps and times every move with perfection. Adam Cotugno, as Billy Crocker, adds a fine voice and dances smoothly. Samantha Cardenas as Hope has your attention with every song, and Ray D’Ambrosio as Moonface Martin and Thomas Theriot as Evelyn Oakleigh give concrete support.
Director Michael Ryken moves his people with strong definition and without wasting time. A special award should go to choreographer Robyn Tribuzi. Her tap numbers hold their own with any New York Company: sharp, clean and delightful. The fact that she has some well-trained dancers helps.
Margret Toomey’s costumes are stunning, Fred Sharkey’s set, Michael Ramsaur’s lighting, Jonathen Hayward’s sound and a fine 10-piece orchestra under the baton of Sean Kana bring in a solid production.
“Anything Goes” is the ultimate, old-fashioned musical that entertains and leaves a very happy audience. If you want to feel good, go and see “Anything Goes”.
