20-year-old shot in arm at intersection of Monterey Road and
Welburn; suspects sought
Gilroy – A 20-year-old Pacific Grove man was shot in the arm in an apparent road rage incident early Saturday morning, police said. The man is expected to live, however, he was still in a San Jose area hospital as of press time Monday.

According to police, the man was leaving the Krazy Koyote just after midnight Saturday when he nearly hit an unidentified red pickup truck. There was a verbal altercation between the occupants and the driver of the truck followed the man to the intersection of Monterey Road and Welburn Avenue.

Police arrived minutes after the 911 call, but were unable to locate the pickup. At that point, the victim told police one of the passengers fired a handgun at him before fleeing the scene.

“It appears the incident was the result of some sort of road rage based upon the statement the victim gave,” said Gilroy Police Cpl. Justin Matsuhara.

The suspects are described as four white males in an unknown model of a red pickup, police said.

The last recorded incident of road rage in Gilroy was last June when the drivers, passengers and family members brawled on the 1470 block of Buena Vista Avenue after a severe crash between two vehicles sent the cars crashing into seven other cars parked on the street. No one sustained major injuries during the dispute.

In 2003, a 22-year-old Gilroy man was arrested after throwing glass bottles out the window of his car at a minivan that was tailgating him on Highway 25. A 31-year-old passenger in the van ended up stabbing the man during a fight near the on ramp of U.S. 101.

Anyone with information about Saturday’s shooting is asked to contact Detective Dan Zen at 846-0335.
