Dear Editor:

Did anyone feel a tinge of “male bashing”, anger and frustration in reading Denise Apuzzo’s latest column of Aug. 5, 2004? What an alarming headline… “Men used to telling women what to do with their bodies”! A bit over the top ?…perhaps. Unfair generalization of men? …definitely!

Apparently Ms. Apuzzo totally overlooked the main point in my Dispatch letter of Wednesday, July 27, which called for more respect of people with differing opinions and to be fair and factual in criticisms of others. In this latest column, Ms. Apuzzo openly admits to being a feminist and pleaded guilty to the “character assassination” of Mr. David Kaeini, because his gender did not render him qualified to write about moral issues of contraception.

Personally, it is a turn-off when journalists resort to belittling and name calling in defending their argument. I figure that if they resort to attacking someone personally rather than sticking strictly to the issues, it is a signal of weakness and desperation to win a debate. Remember your own schoolyard bully, whose intimidations and name calling were a mere front to his real fear of you. I vote to clean up the mud-slinging going on lately in the Dispatch columns and editorials and re-focus on our community’s issues.

In regard to Ms. Apuzzo’s argument in her current column, she discusses the need for birth control, sterilization, use of abortifacient birth control pills, and morning after pills. They are all somehow morally justified because of the realities of casual sex and the “pressing issue” of rape in this country. She then implies and invokes God’s support of their use preventing unwanted pregnancies. Come on. How absurd! The underlying truth is that Ms. Apuzzo and other feminists want women to enjoy perceived equivalent rights and freedoms as men to have sex with whomever and whenever they want without consequential pregnancy and to have unilateral control as to if, and when to give birth. From personal experience …is there ever a perfect time to have a child? Couple this philosophy along with the “flaws of human nature” and the latest craze of homosexual marriage and we are now set to “Fornicate into Extinction”. I find it hard to believe that the Creator of Life has this as His plan.

Let us not forget that the greatest gift God gave mankind came to us through the conception of an unmarried, very young virgin. A conception that in those days, if accepted, carried a death sentence and in todays terms would often be deemed unwanted, perhaps aborted. What bravery, courage and faith this young woman exhibited to accept it and give birth. This story we memorialize and celebrate ever Dec. 25th.

Thank God, Mary said YES!
