GILROY – A middle-aged man robbed Gilroy’s movie theater at gunpoint Friday and escaped with between $4,000 and $5,000 in cash, according to police.
Employees at Platinum Theatres described the robber as a white man between 40 and 50 years old with blond-grey, shoulder-length hair, standing 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He wore a blue baseball hat, a dark blue pullover jacket and tan pants.
The man approached an employee at about 10:30 p.m. and asked to speak to the manager, according to police. The man said he was looking for a lost purse.
The employee led the man to the business office and called the assistant manager on duty. When this manager arrived, the robber drew a handgun, described as semi-automatic, and took the cash – which the manager had been counting on the business desk, according to police.
It is unknown whether the robber escaped on foot or in a vehicle. Many people at the theater saw him before and after the actual robbery, Platinum Theatres General Manager Ed Jackson said.
Jackson, who took over at Platinum Theatres two weeks ago, declined to comment further on the incident.
“We feel that the more information we give out, the more we would encourage copycat attempts,” Jackson said.
