Gilroy Police Officers responding to calls about a large fight on the 200 block of Farrell Avenue at 7:54 p.m. Saturday discovered shots had been fired and one victim had been stabbed.

The stabbing victim, a 21-year-old Gilroy male whose identity is being withheld by police, was treated at Saint Louise Regional Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and released, said Gilroy Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza. The victim had already been taken to hospital by a third party when officers arrived, added Sgt. Espinoza.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that unknown suspects created a disturbance at a residence on Farrell Avenue and in the ensuing fight a suspect fired several shots from an unknown type of handgun directly into the crowd.

The reason for the attack remains unclear, but according to Sgt. Espinoza, eyewitness accounts point to a prior altercation at Las Animas Park located on the corner of Wren Avenue and Mantelli Drive.

“We have reason to believe that the victim was stabbed at the party,” said Sgt. Espinoza. “The Anti-Crime Team is working to put all the pieces together.”

Other people who were physically assaulted declined medical attention, according to Sgt. Espinoza. At this time, no gunshot victims have been identified or come forward to police.

The GPD Anti-Crime Team is investigating this incident as a gang motivated crime. No descriptions of suspects have been released by GPD.

The investigation is ongoing, confirmed Sgt. Espinoza. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GPD Anti-Crime Team at 408-846-0350. Parties wishing to remain anonymous may call We-Tip at 1-800-782-7463 (800-78-CRIME).
