The Gavilan College baseball team improved to 4-1 in the Coast Conference and 11-6 overall with its 5-4 decision against host Monterey Peninsula College on Saturday.

The Rams, ranked No. 18 in the Northern California Coaches’ Poll, survived a three-run Lobos eighth inning, which cut into their 5-1 lead entering the frame.

Shea Adams tossed 7 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Steve Cabral went the rest of the way for the save.

MPC went in front 1-0 in the second inning, but the Rams countered back with a pair in the fourth. Gavilan proceeded to score a run in each of the next three innings, including a seventh inning home run off the bat of Julio Cortez to make it 5-1.

Tyler Oertle had two hits (one a triple), Kenny Hall produced two hits, and Brian Bradley, Chris Bradley and Johnny Cox (2) had the other RBIs for Gavilan.

The Rams are at De Anza on Tuesday. First pitch is 2:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

The Gavilan softball team posted a 2-2 record at the the March Madness tournament in Fremont over the weekend.

The Rams’ victories came against Merced (8-1) and Feather River (11-3.) In the Merced win, Priscilla Orona, Fernanda Jericoff and Jenny Barboa had three hits apiece, and Adrianna Osuna had a home run.

Elaina Vasquez had a home run and three RBIs against Feather River. Orona also had a four-bagger in the win, Hailey Nelson had three hits and Osuna two base knocks.

Gavilan (10-15-1 overall, 2-3 conference) host San Mateo in a Coast Conference cross-division tilt Tuesday.
