Frank LaCorte, a former Gilroy High and Gavilan College baseball star, had his No. 31 jersey retired by GHS on Saturday night during the Mustangs’ First Pitch Dinner and Silent Auction in the school’s Student Center.
LaCorte pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros and California Angels over the course of a 10-year career in the major leagues. The right-hander was a key part of the bullpen for a 1980 Astros team that reached the National League Championship Series, losing in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies. He was the winning pitcher in Game 2 of the 1980 NLCS.
LaCorte, 61, played his final game in the majors for the Angels in 1984.
