Betty Jean Freeman Maynes passed away June 23, 2016. Betty Jean was born to John Baxter Freeman and Nina Wood Freeman on September 2, 1924, in Denver, Colorado.
She was an only child who was adored by her parents. As a young child, she was introduced to the world of music and thrived in her musical talents and developed into an accomplished violinist. By the time she was 21 years old she had won two “Outstanding Young Violinist” awards in Colorado, played in the Denver Symphony, and was afforded the opportunity to be a soloist with the symphony. Â
At the age of 21 ,she met Stanley LeRoy Maynes, an Army Air Corp Navigator. She thought he was the most handsome officer and it wasn’t long before they were married on December 18, 1945. Â
As newlyweds, they made their home in the San Francisco Bay Area and were blessed with a daughter and two sons.
After their marriage, Betty Jean joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Later, as a young family, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Â
She was a devoted wife and mother. Her greatest interest and effort was to have a gospel-centered home. She always put the needs of her husband and children first. She encouraged her children to be faithful in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to faithfully fulfill their responsibilities in family, community, and Church. She set the example of a faithful disciple of Christ. Often she could be found directing a ward choir, leading music in Relief Society, or being the ward chorister.
She also had the opportunity to be the scribe for Stanley while he served as a Stake Patriarch, transcribing hundreds of patriarchal blessings. During these years she was also active in the Sunnyvale, California and Monterey Bay Symphonies. Â
Betty Jean is survived by her daughter, Lynn Carol, sons, Richard John (Nancy),and Steven Freeman (Karen), and by 13 grandchildren, and 27 and counting great-grandchildren.Â
