An early morning accident in San Martin turned out to be less dramatic than it seemed after a bicyclist admitted he was not hit by a car that fled the scene, but rather just lost control of his bike.

Initially, the bicyclist – a white male in his 40s or 50s – told law enforcement that he had been hit by a vehicle while traveling along San Martin Avenue on the overpass above U.S. 101, said Sgt. John Banister of the California Highway Patrol. However, he soon “changed his story” and said he was actually “driving too fast down the hill and lost control of his bicycle.”

The man had moderate injuries – mostly cuts and bruises – and was flown to a San Jose area hospital, Banister said. He was conscious throughout the investigation and did not appear to have any broken bones.
