GILROY—The boys water polo teams at Gilroy and Christopher High schools have spent the summer practicing. Now, the Garlic City boys are ready for action and they’ll kick off the competitive season with a game against one another.
GILROY—Change is in the water at Gilroy and Christopher High schools. At Gilroy, there’s a new skipper leading the Mustangs, and at Christopher, the Cougars are bracing for a tough test against new opponents in the upper Gabilan Division of the Monterey Bay League.
With too many wrestlers approaching their 40 match limit, Gilroy was only able to send three to the Mission San Jose Tournament Friday and Saturday in Fremont.
From the start of the season, Gilroys’ goal was to reach the Central Coast Section Division II finals. On Wednesday, that goal was achieved. After falling to Los Altos early, the Mustangs bounced back to top the Eagles 2-1 in seven innings at San Jose PAL Stadium. The win sends Gilroy to the finals where they will take on Mt. Pleasant at 3 p.m. on Saturday. “We’re pretty excited right now,” Mustangs coach Julie Berggren said. “This is definitely something the girls have been working on the entire season. It’s a goal we set at the beginning at the year. We’re really, really excited.”
