MH man arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud, grand theft

Authorities have reportedly uncovered a ring of scam artists who ripped off insurance companies to the tune of about $170,000 by staging car accidents and seeking payouts for faked injuries, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office. 

Dealing with squirrels can be a sticky problem

“Red Phone, we live in west Morgan Hill in the county and we’re having a bigger problem than normal with ground squirrels. They are undermining our barn and there just seems to be more than ever. Also, we’re concerned because they carry diseases. We tried shooting them, we tried trapping them, but they are just everywhere and we’re running out of ideas. Surely, we can’t be the only ones. Help!”

Jetta not linked to other incidents

Anyone who saw a red Volkswagen Jetta with a black hood in north Morgan Hill or south San Jose on or around March 16 is asked to contact the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, because investigators have linked the vehicle to the disappearance and kidnapping of Sierra LaMar. 

Man arrested after pursuit, K-9 bite

A registered sex offender who was involved in a domestic dispute Wednesday ran barefoot from police and was arrested when a sheriff’s K-9 officer bit him on the arm, according to authorities.

From one child to another

Children ages 2 and 3 from Little Sonshine School in Morgan Hill donated 26 stuffed animals to Saint Louise Regional Hospital Tuesday afternoon. The stuffed animals will be given to comfort children in the emergency room.

Man rolling joint leads police to assault weapons, drugs

A man rolling a marijuana joint in a public parking area inadvertently led police to a trove of guns, ammunition, cash and drugs, police said. 

Landscape scammer continues working

Since South Valley Newspapers wrote an April 24 story about a 77-year-old Gilroy man who claimed he was scammed by a crook under the guise of a friendly tree pruner, 10 others from Gilroy and Morgan Hill have come forward with similar stories of a man by the name of Michael Oliveira who collected money for work he never completed, prompting police to launch an investigation.

Fireworks to remain at Community Park in Morgan Hill

Morgan Hill’s annual Independence Day fireworks display will continue as planned at the Community Park July 4, according to the holiday event organizers.
